Speechless

A bomb was dropped on me this morning. One of my lifelong friends is going to prison for a crime he didn't commit. I truly thought the trial would go his way since he proved that the family lied, but the jury still found him guilty. I'm speechless. He won't see his daughters graduate high school, and will miss part of their adulthood, too. His wife doesn't work, so I guess her brothers or the government will have to provide for her and the girls. I don't know what's going to happen. The family has issues, but this is something that I know for sure shouldn't be happening. If he was guilty, I would be ranting like an enraged lunatic right now over his mistake, but I honestly believe he's being wrongfully charged.

I'm already planning to send him some letters, books, pens, and paper after he goes wherever it is that he's going. The sentencing is in December. I told him I'll keep in touch with his youngest to get updates.

I don't even know what to say.

There's little left of justice in the legal system nowadays. Often it comes down to money, gender, skin tone, or -- I shit you not -- how recently the judge had a break and a snack. There are a few organizations that work to overturn wrongful convictions, but they are overbooked and difficult to get help from.
